 | The War Birds
What if one of America’s great WWII fighter pilots never told her story?
Twyla Campbell is a female aviator who survives the attack on Pearl Harbor and becomes a WASP, (Women’s Air Force Service Pilot), transporting planes for the war effort.
While ferrying fighters to Alaska, she meets Marina, a Russian transport pilot and learns of her own husband’s death in the Pacific theater. She boards a transport for the States, but instead lands in a Russian battle-front jail.
Many death defying escapes later, she is back in the company of her friend Marina. Surprisingly, Marina is Captain of an all female fighter squadron, the 586th. She meets the squadron Commander, Valentine Markov who shares her attraction.
After failing to get Twyla out of Russia, she is secretly trained to be a fighter pilot by the most famous female “Ace”, Lily Lytvak. Surviving fierce combat sorties, Twyla becomes an expert fighter and “Ace”.
During the opening moments of a major defensive stand the squadron takes tragic losses, and the girls are split up. Injured, and captured by the advancing allies, Twyla must return home.
Twyla’s love for the Commander forces her to choose between the future of American female aviators, and the Commanders promising political career in post war Russia.
